Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30 in the Atlantic and central Pacific, but the best time to prepare is before a storm is in the forecast.
Taking a few steps now can help protect your family, home and finances.
Develop an evacuation plan
Start by making an evacuation plan, building an emergency supply kit and reviewing your insurance coverage. It’s also a good idea to document your belongings, write down important contacts and take steps to strengthen your home before severe weather arrives.
Assemble disaster supplies
Make sure you have enough essential supplies to carry you through the storm and the difficult days that may follow. Plan for at least three days of non‑perishable food, water, and necessary medications for every person in your household.
Review your coverage
Take the time before hurricane season begins to document your possessions: photos, serial numbers, or anything else that you may need to provide your insurance company when filing a claim.
Reviewing your coverage now can ensure have coverage to repair or even replace your home and/or belongings. Keep in mind that standard homeowners and renters policies do not cover flooding; you’ll need a separate flood policy and there’s a 30‑day waiting period before coverage takes effect.
Create a communication plan
Take the time now to write down your hurricane plan, and share it with your family.
Strengthen your home
Now is the time to purchase the proper plywood, steel or aluminum panels to have on hand if you need to board up the windows and doors ahead of an approaching storm.
Preparing early can make a meaningful difference when a storm threatens. Review your plan regularly and update your supplies each season.
