This morning, Claims Manager Mark O’Brien, spoke with WBEN NewsRadio hosts John Zach and Susan Rose about ice damming, water leaks and storm damage occurring across Buffalo and Western New York due to the unusually cold winter.

Mark explains how to see and identify ice and snow damage to roofs and what may and may not be covered under a homeowners policy. Mark explained that homeowners should ask questions early about what may be covered and to work with your broker to make sure you have the coverage you need. “Refer back to your individual agent about your coverage and read your homeowners policy to understand what is covered and what is not” – Mark O’Brien, Claims Manager

Some tips Mark explained homeowners should safely do if they experience damage:

  • Protect personal property from further damage
  • Take photos of the damage and back those files up in case computers are damaged
  • Make notes of when the damage occurred and when it started
  • Report claims immediately to your carrier or broker to discuss next steps

The audio clip of Mark explaining what to do when you experience damage and how insurance deductibles work can be found here.

Mark explained the ice damage and claims are not just occurring in Buffalo, but also in the cities and towns of our other branch locations throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
