Background/Banner Photo

The background photo on your LinkedIn profile is like a billboard, you can use it as a visual to display Lawley’s branding and services. We have branded LinkedIn background photos to choose from.

Here is how to use them:

  1. Access background photos here and choose the photo you want to use 
  2. Right click on the photo you want to use
  3. Click “Save As”
  4. Save to your desktop
  5. Go to your LinkedIn profile
  6. On the background photo you will see a pencil icon or camera icon, click it
  7. Click change photo
  8. Navigate to the photo you saved on your desktop, click it then click open
  9. Once you see it in the background photo editor, click apply
  10. Congrats, you have a new background photo
Headshot

All of Lawley’s headshots are located in Lawley’s Sales & Marketing Library — Brandfolder, located here.

To visit Brandfolder, find your headshot, and update your LinkedIn profile, follow these directions:

  1. Once in brandfolder and in the headshots tab, type your last name in the search bar
  2. Once you see your headshot pop up, click “View” (appears on hover over thumbnail)
  3. In the bottom right hand corner, you will see “Download” click to download headshot
  4. It will most likely save to your Downloads folder
  5. Go to your LinkedIn profile
  6. Click your current picture
  7. When the editor opens, click “Add Photo”
  8. Click “Upload Photo”
  9. Navigate to where your headshot is saved, most likely your Downloads folder (find in the left hand navigation menu)
  10. Select your headshot and click open
  11. Click “Save photo”
  12. Congrats! You have an updated headshot
Introduction

There are multiple areas to update, so look through the separate instructions to see how to update each section:

Click the pencil icon (top right) to open the editor

    1. Put in your First Name & Last Name
      1. You can also add a former name if applicable by clicking “Add former name”
  2. Headline:
    You can create your own headline (title is most used) or choose one of the headline options below to highlight what you do for your clients and how you help solve their pain points.

    1. Click the blue linked “edit contact info” to open a separate editor to update contact info
    2. Profile URL
      This is automatically customized
      You can change it if needed by clicking on the arrow then clicking on the pencil next to edit custom url
      • Some Examples are:
        • Your full name like this: firstnamelastname (example: mikelawley)
        • First initial last name: firstinitiallastname (example: mlawley)
        • Name and title: firstnamelastnametitle (example: mikelawleyinsuranceadvisor
        • Something custom, but that is professional and meaningful: example: mikelawleyprincipalatlawley
        • Can use dashes between words if you like. Example: mike-lawley-principal
      • Click “Save” to apply
About

Your about section is a summary of who you are, what you do at Lawley, and how you help clients.

You can use the example below to copy & paste into your about section.
REMEMBER to customize the bolded area in the sample, this should be specific to you:

  1. Scroll to the About section & Click the pencil icon in the section
  2. Copy & paste the text below into the editor (highlight, right click, copy, then paste in editor on LinkedIn)
    1. Remember to customize the bold section with your personal information. If you don’t want to include personal information, delete this section
  3. Click save or apply

Featured

The featured section is where you can add different types of media to feature on your profile. If you don’t already have a featured section on your profile, you will have to add it:

  1. Go to your LinkedIn profile
  2. Click “Add profile section” near your intro
  3. Click the arrow next to “Featured”
  4. Pick the type of “Featured” element you want to add
    1. Posts: You can pick from posts you have shared on LinkedIn previously to feature
      1. Just click on “Star Icon Feature” under the posts you want to feature, do it for as many as you like
      2. Click “Done”
    2. Articles: This will allow you to feature articles you have published on LinkedIn previously.
    3. Links: This allows you to paste any link you want to share. Below, we have links you can copy and paste for your featured section, or grab any URL from the web to share (always read the content before sharing!)
    4. Media: This will allow you to upload a file (picture, PDF, video, etc.) from your computer. Navigate to the file, click open, click done.

FEATURE LINKS: Just copy and paste the link starting with https and click “Done” to feature on your profile!

Experience

The experience section of your LinkedIn profile pertains to your career portfolio and past experiences.

  1. Add each new experience (*each organization by clicking on the plus sign)
    1. If you have held multiple positions at the same organizations you can list them by date
  2. Edit description of each position by clicking on the pencil —
    1. The description should be a summary of the position, similar to what you would put on a resume 
Education

Education is where you can list your degrees and where you went to school:

  1. If you don’t have any education listed, click the + icon
  2. To edit your education, click the pencil icon
    1. School: Type in the name of the your school and select from the drop down
    2. Degree: Type in degree earned, ex. Bachelor’s
    3. Field of Study: Put in Major or program
    4. Start Year: Put year you started
    5. End Year: Put year finished
    6. Grade: Put in GPA, optional
    7. Activities and societies: put in clubs, extracurriculars, sports, etc. in a list format with commas separating
    8. Add a description if you would like, optional
    9. Media: Upload photos or post a link if you would like, optional
    10. Click save to apply
Volunteer

This is where you can add your volunteer experience:

  1. If you don’t have any volunteer info listed, click the + icon
  2. To edit your volunteer info, click the pencil icon
    1. Organization: Type in the name of the your organization and select from the drop down (make sure the logo populates so it is correctly linked). If not in the drop down, don’t select, just finishing typing in (logo will not populate)
    2. Role: Type in role at organization, example: Board Member
    3. Cause: Select appropriate cause
    4. I am currently volunteering in this role (check if applicable)
    5. Start date: Put date you started
    6. End date: Put year finished, if applicable
    7. Add a description if you would like, optional
    8. Click save to apply
Skills & Endorsements

Here is where you can list your skills:

  1. To add a skill, click “Add a new skill”
  2. Type in skill and select from suggestions or select from the suggested skills by hitting the + sign next to it
  3. Click Add
  4. Edit Your Skills
    1. Click the pencil icon in the skills section
    2. Once editor opens, you will see “Top Skills” in the first section and “Industry Knowledge” in the other section
    3. The green pins mean those are the Top Skills someone will see highlighted on your profile
    4. You can delete a skill by click the trash can icon next to it
    5. You can move it up the list/reorder by clicking and holding the 4 lines next to a skill and dragging where you want it to go
    6. To move to the “Top Skills” (you can only have 3) toggle the pin icon to be green, this means it is on. To remove one from the Top Skills, toggle it off. This gives you room to add a new one. You can’t move a new one up there until there is less than 3
    7. Once done editing, click save
Recommendations

Asking for recommendations and giving recommendations is a great way to have other people/clients leave testimonials about your work!

To ask for a recommendation:

  1. Click Ask for a recommendation
  2. When the editor opens, type in the name of the person you want to ask, select from the drop down
  3. Once selected, choose relationship type and your position
  4. Input a custom message like:
    1. Thank you for agreeing to leave me a recommendation about your experience with me and Lawley pertaining to your insurance service and coverage. It means a lot to me that you would take time out of your day! If you would like a recommendation that I could provide, please just let me know. Have a great day!
  5. Click “Send”
  6. TIP: If you are asking a client for a recommendation, proper etiquette is to ask them in a personal email first. You can use this template to email them by copying and pasting into an Outlook email, once they consent, you go ahead and request it on LinkedIn

PERSONAL EMAIL EXAMPLE

Hope you are well! I really value our relationship and am truly happy that myself and Lawley can be your insurance partners, providing the protection you need. I was wondering, if you had a moment, if I could ask you to leave a LinkedIn recommendation for me since we are connected there? I wanted to ask you via email first, but if you agree, I will send you a recommendation request through LinkedIn. It would mean a lot to me and help speak to other potential clients about your experience working with me and Lawley.

Accomplishments

Accomplishments is a great way to add miscellaneous information about yourself.

  1. To add an accomplishment, click the + icon in the accomplishments section
  2. Select the type of accomplishment
  3. Follow the steps to add that type of accomplishment
  4. Click “Save” to apply
