Success Story In the Health Care Industry
Effective Risk Management
Lawley Insurance was chosen by a Nursing Home Client to develop and implement a Risk Management program. Working with the Client team, we developed a process that:
- Addressed current/open claims and their costs
- Controlled costs for future claims
- Looked to reduce those exposures that lead to worker's compensation losses
Lawley’s program lowered losses and their costs through:
- A plan of action with the Client financial team based on the recognized patterns of loss
- Accountability with facility management to become part of the process in controlling claim costs
- Institution of a drug test program
- Evaluations and follow-up surveys at each location
- Instituting safety committees that included the home office Risk Manager directed at prevention of future losses
- Promoted and supported the zero lift program implementation
- Initiation of a Transitional Return to Work Program
- Successful closing of open claims through aggressive claims management
- Successfully institution of a First Aid Program to self-pay for smaller claims, keeping these items from negatively affecting the experience modification
- Providing training on accident investigation and controls
- Coordinating carrier service to fit within the framework of our service plan
The results from this approach, over the five-year period include:
- A dramatic drop in NY claim submissions from almost 900 in when we started to merely 184 claims submitted five years later
- An equally dramatic reduction in claim dollars of over $1.8 million at the beginning to slightly over $590,000 in the fifth policy year – with almost half the current year claims closed
- The first aid program covered a total of 649 bills valued at $79,610
- After fee scheduling the paid First Aid amount was reduced to $61,889 resulting in a $17,524 savings
In year six we, along with facility management, developed a plan to address in-bed repositioning and driving exposures. These are the next two significant or potentially significant loss generating areas that fit into our systemic loss reduction program.
